• Keep the original files, including any dashcam recording, rather than saving only screenshots or edited clips.

Close-ups and wider photographs answer different questions. A damaged bumper may show where contact occurred; a wider scene may explain how the cars were positioned.

Identify witnesses and possible recordings

An independent witness may have seen the moments before the crash. If someone offers assistance, ask whether they saw the collision and whether they are willing to share contact information. Avoid coaching their account.

Nearby businesses, homes, or other motorists may have recordings. Note the locations promptly and tell your attorney. A camera's presence does not guarantee usable footage, and recordings may be overwritten. Preserving relevant material early is more useful than assuming it will still exist months later.

Document the effects on your daily life

A vehicle repair estimate does not tell the full story of an injury. Keep medical visit records, bills, work restrictions, and documentation of missed work. Follow your treating professional's instructions and accurately describe changes in symptoms.

A simple dated record can also help you explain practical limitations: a missed shift, difficulty driving to an appointment, or needing help with a household task. Keep it factual. Do not exaggerate symptoms or assume a particular diagnosis.

What if several vehicles were involved?

In a chain-reaction crash, distinguish the first impact you felt from later impacts. Record where you were stopped, whether you heard a collision before your vehicle moved, and which vehicles contacted yours. Different accounts and physical evidence may need to be compared before responsibility is clear.
