What You Need to Know about Semi Trucks’ Blind Spots

Trucking Accidents

Semi trucks share Missouri’s highways with passenger vehicles every day, creating situations where understanding truck blind spots becomes critical for driver safety. These massive vehicles have significantly larger blind spots than regular cars, and many drivers don’t realize just how limited a truck driver’s visibility can be until it’s too late.

When accidents occur involving commercial trucks and passenger vehicles, the consequences are often severe due to the size and weight differences between the vehicles. Understanding truck accident liability requires knowledge of how these blind spots contribute to collisions and what drivers can do to protect themselves on the road.

The Reality of Semi Truck Blind Spots

Semi trucks have four main blind spot areas, often called “No Zones” by safety experts. These areas extend much further than most passenger car drivers realize. The blind spot directly behind a semi truck can extend up to 30 feet, while the blind spot on the right side can be two lanes wide.

The left side blind spot, while smaller than the right side, still extends one lane over and runs the length of the truck and trailer. What you might not realize is there’s a front blind spot too, which extends approximately 20 feet in front of the truck’s cab. When a truck driver sits 8 to 10 feet off the ground, entire passenger cars can disappear from view in these zones.

Weather conditions common in Missouri can make these visibility issues even worse. Rain, snow, and fog reduce visibility further, and the spray kicked up by truck tires in wet conditions creates additional visual barriers. Roads like Interstate 70 through Missouri sees heavy truck traffic, and drivers navigating this route during winter weather face particularly challenging conditions.

Why These Blind Spots Are So Dangerous

The physics involved in truck accidents make understanding blind spots crucial. A fully loaded semi truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, compared to the average passenger car weight of around 4,000 pounds. When a truck driver can’t see a passenger vehicle and begins changing lanes or turning, the results can be catastrophic.

Truck drivers receive extensive training on checking mirrors and managing blind spots, but they’re still human beings operating massive vehicles in complex traffic situations. They might check their mirrors, see the area is clear, and begin a maneuver, not realizing a passenger car has entered a blind spot during that brief moment. Or they might lack the experience — or concern — to use their mirrors as carefully as reasonably possible.

The stopping distance for trucks also plays a role in blind spot dangers. A truck traveling at highway speeds might need 300 feet or more to come to a complete stop. If a passenger vehicle cuts into the front blind spot and then has to brake suddenly, the truck driver might not have enough time to react, even if they do see the vehicle.

Common Blind Spot Accident Scenarios

Right-side blind spot accidents often occur when trucks are making right turns or changing lanes to the right. The passenger vehicle might be traveling in the right lane, planning to continue straight, while the truck driver begins a right turn without seeing the car. These accidents frequently happen at intersections in areas like downtown Kansas City or St. Louis, where truck routes intersect with regular traffic patterns.

Rear blind spot accidents typically involve passenger vehicles following too closely behind trucks. The car might be invisible to the truck driver, and if the truck needs to brake suddenly or back up, the passenger vehicle has no escape route. This scenario is particularly common in stop-and-go traffic on highways like I-44 through the Ozarks.

Left-side passing accidents can occur when passenger vehicles linger in the blind spot while attempting to pass. The truck driver might begin changing lanes to the left, not seeing the car that’s been traveling alongside for several seconds. Highway 63 between Columbia and Jefferson City sees this type of accident when passenger vehicles don’t complete their passes quickly enough.

Legal Implications of Blind Spot Accidents

Missouri follows comparative fault rules in truck accidents, meaning that both the truck driver and passenger vehicle driver’s actions are evaluated when determining liability. However, truck drivers are held to higher standards due to their commercial driver’s licenses and professional training.

The trucking company might also bear responsibility for blind spot accidents. Companies are required to ensure their drivers are trained on things like proper mirror usage and blind spot awareness. They must also maintain their vehicles properly, including keeping mirrors clean and properly adjusted.

Insurance companies often try to shift blame to passenger vehicle drivers in blind spot accidents, arguing that the car driver should have known better than to travel in the truck’s blind spot. But truck drivers have professional responsibilities to check their blind spots thoroughly before making any maneuvers.

Federal regulations require specific mirror configurations on commercial trucks, and failure to maintain these mirrors properly can contribute to liability. Trucking companies that don’t enforce proper mirror adjustment and cleaning procedures might face additional responsibility for accidents.

Protecting Yourself Around Semi Trucks

The most effective protection involves staying out of truck blind spots whenever possible. When passing a truck, do it quickly and decisively. Don’t linger alongside the trailer where the driver can’t see you. If you can’t see the truck driver in their side mirror, they definitely can’t see you.

Maintaining proper following distance behind trucks is equally important. The general rule suggests staying far enough back that you can see the truck’s mirrors. This distance also gives you more time to react if the truck brakes suddenly or begins backing up.

When trucks are turning, give them extra space. Trucks need wide turning radiuses, and the trailer might swing into adjacent lanes during turns. This is particularly important on Missouri’s older city streets where intersections weren’t designed with modern truck traffic in mind.

Be especially cautious around trucks in construction zones, which are common on Missouri highways during summer months. Reduced lane widths and shifted traffic patterns can put passenger vehicles in blind spots more easily.

About those federal regulations…

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration sets specific requirements for truck mirrors and driver training, but enforcement can be inconsistent. Trucking companies sometimes cut corners on training or vehicle maintenance, and these shortcuts can contribute to blind spot accidents.

Driver fatigue also affects blind spot awareness. A tired truck driver might not check mirrors as thoroughly or might miss seeing vehicles in their peripheral vision. Hours of service regulations exist to prevent fatigue, but violations still occur.

When Accidents Happen

If you’re involved in a blind spot accident with a semi truck, the immediate priority is getting medical attention for any injuries. Truck accidents often cause serious injuries even at relatively low speeds due to the weight differences involved.

Document the accident scene if you’re able to do so safely. Take photos of vehicle positions, road conditions, and any relevant traffic signs or signals. Get the truck driver’s commercial license information and the trucking company’s insurance details.

Don’t admit fault or speculate about what happened. Blind spot accidents can be complex, and determining liability requires careful investigation of factors like mirror adjustment, driver training records, and vehicle maintenance history.

The trucking company’s insurance representatives will likely contact you quickly after the accident. Remember that they’re working to minimize their company’s liability, not to ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries and damages. It’s your attorney who will represent your best interests in this process.
