What Parents Need to Know About Teen Summer Driving Risks

What Parents Need to Know About Teen Summer Driving Risks

School's out, the weather's warm, and teenagers across Missouri are hitting the road. It should be a time of freedom and fun — but for too many families, summer marks the beginning of the most dangerous driving season of the year.

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the "100 Deadliest Days" for teen drivers. Here's what Missouri parents need to know, and what you can do to protect your child.

The 100 Deadliest Days Are Real

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the average number of fatal teen crashes increases by 17% during the summer months compared to the rest of the year. That's not a minor uptick — it's a significant spike that has persisted year after year.

In Missouri specifically, teen drivers are overrepresented in crash statistics. Drivers aged 15–19 account for a disproportionate share of all traffic crashes relative to their share of licensed drivers. And the reasons are both predictable and preventable.

Why Summer Is So Dangerous for Teen Drivers

More Time on the Road

During the school year, teen driving is largely limited to commuting. Summer eliminates that structure. Teens drive more miles, more often, and at different times of day — including late at night, when crash risk is highest.

More Passengers, More Distraction

Summer means road trips, beach days, and cruising with friends. Each additional teenage passenger in the car increases the risk of a fatal crash. With three or more teen passengers, the risk of a fatal crash quadruples compared to driving alone.

The combination of conversation, music, phone use, and horseplay creates a lethal cocktail of distraction.

Inexperience with New Situations

Driving to school every day follows a routine. Summer driving is different: construction zones, unfamiliar routes, night driving, and weather conditions like sudden thunderstorms that new drivers haven't encountered.

Impaired Driving

Summer parties and graduation celebrations sometimes involve alcohol or other substances. Even responsible teens can make one bad decision that changes everything.

Late-Night Driving

Curfews relax during summer. Driving between 9 PM and midnight is significantly more dangerous — limited visibility, more impaired drivers on the road, and fatigue all contribute.

Missouri's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Law

Missouri has a GDL system designed to phase in driving privileges for new drivers. Understanding these rules — and enforcing them beyond what the law requires — is one of the most effective things parents can do.

Instruction Permit (Age 15+)

  • Must be accompanied by a qualified person (licensed driver 21+)
  • Must hold for at least 182 days
  • No convictions for alcohol offenses

Intermediate License (Age 16–18)

  • No driving alone between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM (with limited exceptions)
  • No more than one passenger under 19 for the first six months
  • No more than three passengers under 19 after that
  • No texting while driving (this is a primary offense in Missouri)

Under 21 Full License

  • Full driving privileges
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol (any detectable BAC is a violation)

Key point: These are minimum legal requirements. Parents can — and should — set stricter rules, especially around passenger limits and curfews.

What Parents Can Do

1. Create a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement

Put expectations in writing. Cover when your teen can drive, where they can go, who can be in the car, and consequences for violations. Studies show that teens with written agreements are 50% less likely to engage in risky driving behavior.

2. Ride Along — A Lot

The more supervised practice your teen gets, the safer they'll be when driving solo. Ride with them in different conditions: rain, night, highway, construction zones. Missouri requires 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night) — do more than the minimum.

3. Set Firm Passenger Rules

The GDL limits passengers for good reason. Consider extending the passenger restriction beyond the six-month minimum. The risk doesn't magically disappear at month seven.

4. Model Good Behavior

Your teen has been watching you drive for 16+ years. If you speed, text, or run yellow lights, they'll do the same. Set the example you want them to follow.

5. Discuss the Consequences — Including Legal Ones

In Missouri, parents can be held financially responsible for crashes caused by their minor children. Talk about the real-world consequences: injuries, lawsuits, insurance costs, and the lifelong impact of causing harm to someone else.

6. Use Technology

Apps and devices that monitor speed, location, phone use, and hard braking can provide an extra layer of accountability. Some insurance companies offer discounts for using them.

7. Have the Hard Conversations

Talk explicitly about drinking and driving, texting and driving, and the pressure they'll face from friends. Give them a no-questions-asked ride home policy — "Call me anytime, I'll pick you up, no punishment."

If Your Teen Is in an Accident

Even the most careful young driver can be the victim of someone else's negligence. If your teenager is injured in a crash:

  • Get medical attention immediately — teens often underreport injuries
  • Document everything — photos, witness information, the other driver's details
  • Don't let insurance companies pressure your teen into a recorded statement
  • Contact an attorney who understands Missouri car accident law and will protect your family's rights

Summer should be memorable for the right reasons. Take the time to have these conversations and set these expectations — it could save your child's life.
